Churn Reduction Value Calculator

Built the growth engine that took cnvrg.io to its acquisition by Intel.

What is cutting monthly churn worth? See the extra gross profit and the customers you keep from your existing base, month by month, using your own numbers.

Churn-reduction value calculator

What lowering monthly churn is worth in gross profit from the customers you already have.

Existing customers only: no new customers, expansion or price changes.

How this is calculated
  1. Customers at the start of month t = customers × (1 − churn)^(t − 1)
  2. Extra gross profit = Σ (customers at target churn − customers at current churn) × ARPA × gross margin
  3. Lifetime gross profit per customer = ARPA × gross margin ÷ churn

What this calculator answers

Retention work competes for budget with acquisition. This calculator puts a number on one side of that trade: the gross profit you keep by lowering churn from today’s rate to a target rate, over a horizon you choose.

How the calculator works

Customers at the start of each month shrink by the churn rate. The calculator runs the base twice, at your current churn and at your target churn, and multiplies the difference in customers by revenue per customer and gross margin. It also shows lifetime gross profit per customer at both rates.

A worked example with hypothetical numbers

With 1,000 customers paying 100 a month at an 80% gross margin, lowering churn from 3% to 2% keeps about 91 more customers after 12 months and adds roughly 44,700 of gross profit over the year. Lifetime gross profit per customer rises from about 2,667 to 4,000. These numbers illustrate the arithmetic; they are not a benchmark or a client result.

What the result does not tell you

Only existing customers are counted: no new customers, expansion or price changes. The cost of the retention work is not included, so compare this value with what the work would cost.

Turn the result into a next step

Find where churn concentrates, by cohort, plan or onboarding step, and price the fix against this value. See lifecycle marketing for how I approach retention.

Churn value questions

Why customer churn and not revenue churn?

The calculator counts customers who leave. If expansion or downgrades matter in your business, model revenue churn separately.

Does it include new customers?

No. It isolates the value of keeping the customers you already have, so acquisition does not blur the comparison.

What does it leave out?

The cost of reducing churn. Compare the value shown with the cost of the retention work before you commit budget.

Does the calculator store or send my numbers?

No. It runs in your browser. Nothing is sent unless you choose to send the result to me, and a share link keeps your numbers after the # sign, which browsers do not send to this site.

Can an AI agent run this calculator?

Yes. The same calculation is available as the run_calculator tool on this site's MCP server and at GET /api/v1/calculators?id=churn, with the same inputs, formulas and limits as this page.
