AI agents for dashboards and reporting
Build a dashboard your team can use to make a decision
Built the growth engine that took cnvrg.io to its acquisition by Intel.
The weekly report should not depend on someone rebuilding charts or explaining why its revenue number changed. I personally build the agreed dashboard and reporting workflow: source definitions, queries, charts, freshness checks and a readable account of what needs attention.
Choose the decision, then the dashboard
A founder deciding where to investigate acquisition needs a different view from a lifecycle owner reviewing activation. We start with the people using the report, the decisions they need to make and the population each metric describes. I turn that into a metric dictionary and a dashboard outline before choosing a layout.
A persistent dashboard differs from an ad-hoc analysis. The analysis answers a question; the dashboard maintains a shared view of agreed measures. We can build either or connect them, but a dashboard full of incompatible definitions does not become reliable because it refreshes automatically.
For source investigation, cohort analysis, forecasts and experiment interpretation, see growth data analysis.
What remains visible when a number changes
| Component | What I implement | What the reader can check |
|---|---|---|
| Metric definition | Numerator, denominator, eligible population and source | What the number actually describes |
| Source model | Agreed queries, joins, currency/timezone and exclusions | How the metric can be reproduced |
| Visual/report | Charts, comparison windows and explanatory annotations | Which decision or exception needs attention |
| Operating state | Last successful refresh, data limits and owner | Whether the view is current enough to use |
A recurring narrative cites the same metric outputs. It can describe a change and plausible questions to investigate, while keeping an explanation or forecast separate from an observed cause.
Implement the output in a tool that actually supports it
I can build the selected dashboard in supported client tooling, including PostHog dashboards or spreadsheet charts where appropriate. Query/read access, dashboard creation and sharing are different permissions. We inspect the actual account, source connections, available chart operations and maintainability before accepting a tooling commitment.
An analytics reporting API is an input, not necessarily a dashboard-authoring API. A management API that lists reports or changes permissions does not establish arbitrary layout creation. If the chosen BI tool needs a template or a manual authoring step, I scope and implement that path rather than promise a nonexistent universal API.
Illustrative example: revenue refreshes while spend is stale
Imagine a weekly acquisition board whose revenue extract is current but advertising spend failed to refresh. This is an illustrative acceptance case, not a measured client result. The workflow retains the last successful spend window, marks the incomplete comparison and routes the source failure. It does not invent a current acquisition-cost figure from mismatched periods.
Once the source is restored, the workflow reruns the agreed period and checks the resulting tables before refreshing the comparison. A report can remain useful with explicit gaps; silently mixing fresh and stale values creates false confidence.

Deliver the board, the model and its operating rules
I personally implement the source/model work, dashboard configuration and agreed recurring report production. Your metric owners approve definitions and business interpretation. The board owner approves recipients, access and publication. A preview or local chart is distinct from a saved client dashboard or a shared report.
- Test missing inputs, duplicate records, empty cohorts, source changes and failed refreshes.
- Retain query/model definitions, chart configuration and the source window behind the report.
- Record permissions, operator responsibilities and the agreed response to a changed metric.
- Hand over the documented implementation, or include continuing maintenance and reporting in my scope.
Measure usefulness beyond the number of charts
Acceptance asks whether the right people can find, explain and use the agreed measures, and whether the report exposes missing or stale inputs. Compare preparation, review and correction effort using the same reporting task before and after adoption. Source completeness and later business improvement need their own evidence.
This work suits teams with recurring decisions and an owner for definitions and review. I can begin with a personally performed source investigation when the data is not ready. We agree the initial dashboard, source work, audience, handoff and any ongoing operation for the actual client or project.
Questions before the build
Do you build the dashboard or only recommend charts?
I personally build the agreed dashboard and reporting implementation, including source definitions, supported queries, charts, checks and documentation. A personally performed data investigation can be the first deliverable; later implementation and ongoing operation follow the scope we agree. Advisory is the separate advice-only offer.
Which dashboard tools can you use?
We select the client tool after inspecting source compatibility, supported authoring operations, account features and access. PostHog dashboards and spreadsheet charts are possible paths, while other tools may need a template or manual configuration. No universal dashboard-authoring API is assumed.
Can you join advertising, product, CRM and revenue data?
Yes, where the permitted sources and usable identifiers support the agreed model. I define the joins, eligible populations and exclusions, and retain ambiguous or missing records. The dashboard does not turn an uncertain identity join into confirmed attribution.
Will the agent explain why a metric changed?
It can assemble source-linked observations and candidate explanations for review. An observed change is distinct from a causal conclusion. I include alternative explanations, source limits and the next investigation rather than have a generated narrative certify causality.
What if a source stops refreshing?
The view exposes freshness and the failed source or step, retains the relevant window and follows the accepted repair route. It does not silently present stale data as current or an unavailable source as zero. Refresh and recovery cases are part of implementation acceptance.
What does our team keep after handoff?
The agreed dashboard configuration, source/query definitions, metric dictionary, refresh and sharing rules, acceptance cases and operating instructions, subject to the selected tool licences and account ownership. We name who maintains sources and approves changed definitions.
Personal strategy and implementation
Choose the decision your recurring report should support
Bring a current report, the sources behind it and the people who need to act on it. I will define the dashboard, data work and operating responsibilities that make the next version useful.
