Pricing and Packaging Research
Choose your next pricing or packaging move with buyer evidence. I personally research the decision and deliver clear options, trade-offs and a test plan.
Turn a pricing debate into a decision you can review
A feature list does not explain why a buyer chose a plan, stayed with an alternative or abandoned a purchase. A higher stated willingness to pay does not establish a higher realized price. Start with the commercial decision and the evidence that could change it.
I personally investigate the agreed question, interview permissioned participants and synthesize the available evidence. The work connects buying context to packaging options and a decision brief your commercial owner can approve, challenge or defer.
A concrete handoff for the decision
A scoped decision brief
Name the decision, the audience, the current offer, the constraints and who approves the outcome. State what this project must resolve and what remains outside it.
A source-linked evidence matrix
Connect interview observations and available purchase, usage or objection records to their sources. Keep observed behavior, reported preferences, interpretation and assumptions distinct.
Packaging options and trade-offs
Compare agreed options for entitlements, package boundaries or a value metric. Explain buyer relevance, product dependencies and unresolved cost or implementation questions without presenting an untested option as a proven winner.
A recommendation and test handoff
Show the reasoning, contrary evidence and remaining uncertainty. Where a test is warranted, define what to learn, the measures, owners and review conditions before implementation is approved.
How I carry out the research
Agree the decision and boundaries
Choose the offer and customer context, the decision owner, usable records and participants. Agree permissions, time, deliverables and review points before contacting people or interpreting data.
Reconstruct buying decisions
Examine recent purchase, change, renewal or rejection contexts. Ask what prompted action, what alternatives were considered, who influenced the choice and which objections mattered. Explore reactions to concrete options where useful.
Compare evidence and options
Separate customer groups when their needs differ. Record contrary cases and evidence gaps. Compare package and value-metric options against the buyer evidence and the product and commercial facts your team can verify.
Review the decision and next step
Walk through the recommendation with the commercial owner. Record approved choices, deferred questions and responsibilities. A test brief or implementation request follows approval; research completion alone is not evidence of commercial uplift.
What I need from you
You provide the current plans, entitlements and pricing explanation; product limitations and cost-to-serve facts you can substantiate; and the purchase, usage or objection records we agree to examine. Name the people who can resolve product and commercial questions.
We agree participant access, permissions, recruitment responsibilities and available time. You approve invitations and the right to use records. I personally perform the agreed research and synthesis; your designated owners approve prices, terms and implementation.
Billing engineering, contract changes, migrations, discount approval and statistically powered experimentation are outside this research scope. If another specialist or implementation owner is needed, the handoff identifies that dependency without implying that I supply it.
When this is the right scope
This is useful when an existing offer has a concrete pricing or packaging decision and you can provide relevant buyer or purchase evidence. It is less useful when the team wants a guaranteed price, a revenue forecast treated as fact or a billing migration without research.
The decision may be to proceed, refine an option, gather more evidence or defer the change. Judge the research by the quality and traceability of the decision materials; judge a later commercial change against its own agreed measures and actual results.
If the question is broader than pricing, start with Customer and Market Research or Positioning and Messaging.
Pricing research: practical questions
What decision is this engagement designed to support?
Use it when you need to decide how an existing offer should be packaged, what belongs in each option, or which way of charging merits further investigation. Agree the specific decision and the commercial owner before starting. A broader positioning or launch engagement may be more appropriate when the audience or offer itself is still unsettled.
What will I receive?
The agreed handoff includes a decision brief, a source-linked evidence matrix, packaging or value-metric options with their trade-offs, and a recommendation with open assumptions. If testing is appropriate, I prepare a test brief covering the question, audience, measures, responsibilities and review conditions. Select the exact outputs in the work order.
What evidence and access do you need?
Bring your current plans, entitlements and pricing explanation, relevant purchase and objection records, and the product and cost facts your team can support. We agree which records I may use and which participants can be approached. Missing evidence stays visible in the recommendation.
Who arranges and approves participant research?
We agree participant criteria, invitations, permissions, scheduling responsibilities and the available time before research begins. You confirm the right to share records and contact participants. I personally carry out the agreed interviews and synthesis. Recruitment, incentives and access dependencies must be agreed rather than assumed.
Will interviews identify the optimal price?
Interviews can explain recent buying decisions, alternatives, objections and reactions to concrete options. They do not establish an optimal price or prove what a market will pay. I distinguish what a participant did, what they said and what remains an assumption; contrary cases and sample limits remain in the handoff.
Do you change billing, contracts or customer prices?
This research scope produces decision materials. Your commercial owner approves prices, discounts, terms and entitlement changes. Your designated product, finance, legal and engineering owners decide and implement billing changes, migrations and contractual commitments. Those activities are not included in the research work order.
What happens if we decide to run a test?
I can prepare a client-approved test brief that names the hypothesis, evidence to collect, constraints, owners and review conditions. Agree any implementation separately after checking access and responsibilities. This engagement does not promise statistical certainty, a particular conversion result or a revenue increase.
How are scope, timing and fees agreed?
We agree the decision, evidence sources, participants, outputs, review points, responsibilities, timing and fees before starting. The plan reflects the access and evidence available. There is no published fixed package price or guaranteed commercial outcome on this page.

Discuss your pricing or packaging decision
Bring the current offer, the decision you need to make, the evidence you can share and the person who will approve prices and terms. I will help define a research scope and a useful handoff before work begins.
