What a fractional CGO actually costs
Fractional CGO Cost
Led growth at cnvrg.io before its acquisition by Intel.
Here is the real day-rate math and the total cost of ownership, no vague ranges.
What a fractional CGO costs and what sets the price
Here is the honest answer: a fractional CGO cost is set by days per week, company stage, and how much of the revenue engine I own. You are buying senior revenue leadership at the bandwidth the problem needs, not a permanent seat you may not be ready to fill.
Price a fractional CGO against the alternatives on total cost and what each covers: benefits, equity, salary or fees, recruitment, ramp time, and who implements. My engagement combines senior growth leadership with hands-on execution, and the responsibilities and commercial terms are agreed around what your business needs. For the return side of the same decision, see fractional CGO ROI.

The four factors that set a fractional CGO retainer
Days per week
Agree the actual weekly work, decisions, personal implementation, meetings and coverage needed. A one-day scope can include a focused build or investigation; a wider schedule can serve a different workload. Days alone do not decide whether the engagement is advice-only or hands-on.
Company stage and complexity
Complexity can change the work: products, regions, buying motions, stakeholders and supporting capacity. Describe those responsibilities in the proposal. Company stage alone does not set a fee floor or establish a universal cost comparison.
Scope of the mandate
Define the personal investigation, model, implementation and ongoing responsibilities the proposal includes. Compare the actual fees and capacity for that work. A diagnostic can be a bounded hands-on scope; price is not established by a universal advice-versus-operation rule.
Engagement length
Duration, delivery checkpoints, payment and exit terms follow the actual agreement. Ask each proposal what ongoing work and handoff are included. No general three- to twelve-month term or automatic longer-commitment discount is implied.
Total cost of ownership: full-time versus fractional
| Cost line | Full-time CGO | Fractional CGO |
|---|---|---|
| Base salary | Actual written compensation offer | Actual agreed engagement fees |
| Bonus and equity | Actual bonus/equity terms and valuation assumptions | Any actual additional compensation or charges |
| Benefits, payroll, taxes | Actual employer costs for the jurisdiction | Actual tools, support and internal operating costs |
| Recruiting and ramp | Actual recruitment, access and onboarding costs | Actual access, onboarding and first deliverables |
| Annual all-in | Sum actual same-period compensation and support | Sum same-period fees, tools, production and support |
| Exit if it is wrong | Actual contract, continuity and replacement costs | Actual notice, handoff and continuity terms |
How I scope and price a fractional CGO engagement
Price the bandwidth, not the title
Start with the work and capacity needed, then compare the schedule and full cost. For illustration only, an assumed $9,000 monthly fee totals $108,000 over twelve months before software, media, extra production and internal support. Use the actual quote and equivalent coverage for the decision; this is arithmetic, not my current rate or a market benchmark.
Set scope and the one number
Agree what I own: diagnosis and blueprint only, or the full revenue number end to end. A tighter scope costs less and exits cleaner. A full mandate across marketing, sales, and retention costs more because the accountability is total.
Fix the term and the exit
We agree scope, capacity, fees, review points and exit terms before work starts. Include notice-period work, handoff and continuity in the comparison. A fractional arrangement can fit a bounded need but is not automatically cheaper than the actual permanent alternative.
Why a fractional CGO beats a full-time hire on cost
Compare total cost and responsibilities using the actual offers: salary, benefits, equity, recruitment, onboarding and implementation coverage. Recruitment cost and time to fill depend on the role and market; no fixed add-on or annual total is established here.
Compare the two on total cost of ownership, not headline salary.
Compare full costs over the same period and responsibilities. We can agree a focused project, ongoing personal operation or a build and handoff, with changes under the actual contract. The useful question is which delivery and coverage the total cost buys, rather than a universal fractional-to-full-time ratio.
My fractional CMO and CGO engagements can both include leadership and personal full-funnel implementation. Scope, capacity and responsibilities set the costs. You can compare fractional CMO rates using the same actual work order and total-cost basis; neither title establishes a universal premium or discount.
Where the cost question fits in the bigger picture
Tell me the problem and I will quote a real number
What has stalled, what the funnel looks like, how many days a week the work needs. I will tell you the bandwidth the engine needs, what it costs, and whether a fractional CGO is the right call before you spend a dollar.

How do fractional CGO and fractional CMO costs compare?
Which companies is a fractional CGO a good fit for?
A fractional CGO fits a company that already has product market fit and real traction, meaning customers, revenue and a product people return to. Growth work compounds on a real product and cannot manufacture demand for a broken one. Before product market fit, we first need to establish whether a scoped engagement suits your funding, product readiness and growth problem.
Are you available to take on a new fractional CGO client?
Before any fractional CGO work starts, I agree its scope, time commitment and availability for that client or project. To get a useful answer quickly, tell me your stage, your rough numbers and the growth problem that keeps you up at night. I usually reply within 1 business day.
Does a fractional CGO engagement carry a minimum term, and what does it take to end it?
The term length and notice period of a fractional CGO engagement are agreed per engagement, and you pay no severance to end it. We fix scope and exit terms up front. Should progress stall, the scope and next steps get reviewed under the contract terms already in place.
