SaaS growth, owned end to end

Fractional CGO for SaaS

Led growth at cnvrg.io before its acquisition by Intel.

I personally lead and implement agreed SaaS growth work across acquisition, activation, conversion, lifecycle, retention and measurement. We choose the sales-led, product-led or hybrid responsibilities, decision rights and measures from your actual business. At Elementor I led acquisition during company growth from $200K to $20M ARR.

What the role actually is

A fractional CGO for SaaS owns ARR, not a channel

I personally lead and implement the agreed SaaS acquisition, activation, sales-handoff, lifecycle, retention and measurement work. We choose sales-led, product-led or hybrid responsibilities and agree the actual authority, capacity and review measures. The mandate does not follow from the title alone.

SaaS economics depend on the actual buying motion, customer cohort, cost scope, margins and observation window. I personally investigate and implement the selected acquisition, product-journey, sales-handoff and retention work with the relevant owners. My historical acquisition role at Elementor informs that approach without establishing universal authority or the current state of its systems.

The 5 SaaS growth levers

Five levers that move ARR, one operator

01

Net revenue retention and expansion

I define net revenue retention for the eligible starting customer cohort, separating expansion, contraction and churn. We review the costs, cash timing and customer evidence behind the result and choose a target from the business. Retained revenue can be valuable, but it is not free and no universal percentage clears a business to scale.

02

Product-led growth motion

PLG only works when activation, in-product conversion, and the sales-assist handoff are wired as one funnel, not three teams guessing. I map the free-to-paid path, find where users stall before the aha moment, and build the qualification signals that tell sales which self-serve accounts are worth a human touch. PLG without that wiring is just a free tier that never converts.

03

CAC payback and unit economics

Define acquisition payback using realized cohort contribution and the agreed acquisition costs, period and exclusions. Review cash constraints, buying cycle and uncertainty before choosing investment. Twelve or eighteen months is not a universal safe or unsafe threshold; I personally implement the selected campaign and measurement work.

04

Activation and onboarding

Choose a meaningful activation behavior and test how it relates to the same cohort’s later paid conversion and retention. I personally investigate onboarding and implement the selected journey and lifecycle changes. A first-session event can be useful evidence without guaranteeing retention or improving every downstream measure.

05

Pricing and packaging

Pricing and packaging can be useful workstreams alongside acquisition, conversion and retention. I personally research the buyer’s value and constraints and build the agreed options or test assets, with commercial and product owners approving changes. The fastest or highest-return lever depends on actual evidence and implementation needs.

The Elementor arc

$200K ARR

Find the real constraint, not the obvious one

At Elementor I led acquisition work during company growth from $200K to $20M ARR, alongside the wider team. Campaigns, measurement, creative and funnel decisions formed part of that work. The company outcome does not isolate which individual change caused the growth.

$200K to $2M

Wire the product-led motion to revenue

Product-led work can include activation, free-to-paid journeys and supported sales-assist signals. Those are specific implementation responsibilities to investigate and test. Elementor’s company ARR trajectory reflects wider work and team contributions; it does not isolate this sequence as the cause of its early growth.

$2M to $20M

Make NRR and expansion carry the growth

As SaaS revenue grows, compare acquisition, retention and expansion using compatible cohorts, contribution, costs and horizons. Seats, usage or lifecycle work can be relevant when the actual product supports it. The company’s historical ARR trajectory does not establish how much a particular NRR or packaging change caused.

Why SaaS needs this role

Why SaaS companies hire a fractional CGO now

Investigate acquisition quality, product value, activation, pricing, sales handoffs and retention rather than presume one cause. A fractional CMO or CGO can lead and personally implement those responsibilities when the mandate and participating owners are explicit.

Name the actual constraint and the cross-functional decisions and implementation needed before choosing the mandate.

A scoped engagement can address an uncertain constraint, a focused build, continuing growth operation or a leadership gap. I personally implement the agreed work and compare customer economics and observation limits with the responsible owners. The actual outsourced CMO or CGO mandate can span the funnel; choose responsibilities and full costs without a title-based price premium or functional cap.

FAQ

Fractional CGO for SaaS FAQ

What does a fractional CGO for SaaS actually own?
A fractional CGO for SaaS owns the entire ARR engine: net revenue retention and expansion, the product-led growth motion, CAC payback and unit economics, activation and onboarding, and pricing and packaging. It is one operator accountable for ARR across product, marketing, sales, and customer success, not a single channel.
Why does SaaS need a CGO instead of a CMO?
Either role can include full-funnel growth work when mandated. Define the decisions, personal implementation, team dependencies and review measures across acquisition, activation, pricing, sales handoffs and retention. A title neither excludes those capabilities nor grants unagreed authority.
What SaaS metrics should a fractional CGO move?
Define NRR, acquisition payback, margin, churn and any efficiency ratio for the actual business and eligible cohort. Record sources, numerator, denominator, cost allocation and observation window. Agree targets from the baseline, cash constraints and intervention; no universal target set establishes healthy growth.
How much does a fractional CGO for SaaS cost?
For a SaaS company below the threshold to justify a permanent C-suite revenue hire, the fractional model gives you that seniority exactly where the constraint is.
What happens on the scoping call?

You tell me where SaaS growth is stuck, and I tell you whether a fractional CGO is the right call, which lever is the real constraint, and what the first 30 days look like. It helps to bring what has stalled, what NRR and CAC payback look like now, and what the board expects next.

What happens when the engagement ends?

The aim is that the engine outlasts the engagement. The mandate is to install the system, prove the unit economics, and hand a running machine to the team. A fractional engagement comes with a clean scope and a defined exit, and scope and contract terms are agreed before work starts.

How many clients do you take on, and how fast do you reply?

I agree the scope, time commitment and availability for each client or project before work starts. Availability changes over time, so contact me to find out where things stand. I read every message myself and reply within 1 business day.
