Revenue owner vs functional growth lead

Chief Growth Officer vs VP of Growth

Led growth at cnvrg.io before its acquisition by Intel.

Compare CGO and VP Growth proposals by actual decision rights, team leadership, personal implementation and coverage. The title does not itself grant authority across functions or limit a VP to executing someone else’s plan.

The core difference

One owns revenue, one runs a function

Compare the actual CGO and VP mandates: strategy, cross-functional decision rights, personal implementation, team leadership and coverage. Either can carry broad growth responsibility when agreed. The title alone does not establish authority, seniority or a cheaper hire.

Either role can combine senior judgement, team leadership and personal implementation. If the problem crosses marketing, sales, product or retention, name the decisions and authority each owner has. At Elementor I led acquisition during company growth from $200K to $20M ARR; that history does not establish that every corporate function reported to me.

Where each sits on the org chart

Altitude is the whole story

Where a VP of Growth sits

Specify the VP role’s actual reporting line, strategy, team leadership, cross-functional rights and personally delivered work. A VP can develop a growth thesis or lead changes across functions when the mandate and resources support it; the title does not set a universal boundary.

Where a Chief Growth Officer sits

Specify the CGO role’s actual decisions, reporting, team responsibilities and implementation. An executive title does not alone establish a board seat or authority over marketing, sales and success. Those rights need agreement with the responsible business owners.

Why altitude changes the work

For a cross-functional constraint, define who can change the message, campaign, product journey, sales handoff or lifecycle and who approves each decision. Either title can fit when the actual mandate, experience and capacity cover those responsibilities.

How to decide

Match the hire to where growth is stuck

Altitude

Strategy vs execution

Choose the person and mandate that cover the actual strategy and delivery needs. Ask what they personally investigate, decide and implement and which approvals or specialist capacity the work needs.

Authority

Functional vs cross-functional

Cross-functional work needs explicit decision rights and cooperating owners. Compare the actual VP and CGO mandates rather than infer authority from executive level or reporting line alone.

Scope

A motion vs the whole engine

A focused channel task and a wider journey problem can require different responsibilities and capacity. I personally lead and implement the agreed work across the selected funnel; choose from the actual mandate rather than assign a universal scope by title.

Why the distinction matters

Hiring the wrong altitude costs you

The decision is not about seniority for its own sake, it is about where your growth problem actually lives. Framed plainly, chief growth officer vs vp growth is a question of which gap you are filling, ownership or execution. If you already have a working growth thesis and you need someone to execute it inside a defined function, a VP of growth is the right and cheaper hire. They will run the playbook harder and faster than a CGO ever would, because execution at depth is the job they signed up for. To review the actual remit before comparing senior growth titles, see what a chief growth officer does.

Name the actual strategy, personal implementation and cross-team decisions required, then compare the proposed people, authority and capacity.

For either title, put both offers side by side on full cost and coverage: salary or fees, benefits, equity, recruitment, ramp time, and who actually does the work. In one engagement I provide senior growth leadership and do the hands-on execution myself, and we agree responsibilities and commercial terms to fit your business. Also look at how a virtual CMO differs from a true cross-functional revenue owner.

FAQ

Chief growth officer vs VP of growth FAQ

How do a chief growth officer and a VP of growth actually differ?
CGO and VP Growth can describe different organizational mandates, but the title alone does not settle scope. Compare actual strategy, team leadership, cross-functional decision rights, personally implemented work, coverage and review measures. I agree those responsibilities for each client or project.
Does a VP of growth report to a chief growth officer?
Often yes. In a company that has both, the VP of growth typically reports up to the chief growth officer or to a CMO who in turn aligns with the CGO. The CGO owns the cross-functional revenue strategy, and the VP of growth executes a slice of it. Smaller companies usually have one or the other, not both.
When should I hire a VP of growth instead of a chief growth officer?
Define the decision and delivery gap, including any cross-functional rights and dependencies. Compare named candidates and proposals on relevant experience, personal implementation, capacity, continuity and full costs. Neither a single-function problem nor fundraising automatically determines which title to hire.
Is a chief growth officer more senior than a VP of growth?
Seniority, authority, board participation and compensation follow the actual role and agreement. A CGO title does not itself guarantee any of them, and a VP can hold broad strategic or cross-functional responsibilities. Review the actual mandate and offer.
Can I hire a fractional chief growth officer instead of a full-time one?

Yes. A fractional chief growth officer is a part-time C-suite operator accountable for the number. A fractional CGO works well at growth stage because you get C-suite revenue ownership and the authority that comes with it, at the bandwidth the problem needs. If your gap is ownership of the whole revenue engine, that is the seat to fill. If your gap is execution inside one function, a VP of growth is the hire.

Is a fractional chief growth officer the same as a virtual or part-time CMO?

Both CMO and CGO mandates can span acquisition, product journeys, sales handoffs, retention and measurement. Choose the actual responsibilities, decision rights, personal implementation and coverage needed. My work is scoped to the task rather than a title-based functional cap.

Are you taking on a new fractional growth client right now?

I agree the scope, time commitment and availability for each client or project before work starts. Send a message with your stage and the one growth problem you need solved. I read every message myself and reply within 1 business day.

What is the minimum term or contract length for a fractional CGO engagement?

Whether the seat is titled CGO or VP Growth, the length of the contract and the notice period are set per engagement. A fractional arrangement ends without any severance cost. We agree the time commitment, the duration and the contract terms up front, before the work begins.
