The role, described as it actually runs
What Does a Chief Growth Officer Do?
Led growth at cnvrg.io before its acquisition by Intel.
This page describes four growth responsibilities and an illustrative working rhythm. In my engagements I lead and personally implement the agreed work; days, capacity and availability are defined per client or project. The example does not reserve a full week for one client or guarantee a blocker removed every week.
The job is to own the number and remove its blocker
A chief growth officer owns net revenue across every function that touches it, then spends the week finding and fixing the single biggest blocker to that number. That is the whole job. Everything below is just how it plays out in practice.
Growth work can connect acquisition, product journeys, sales handoffs, retention and measurement. A CMO, VP or CGO can lead those responsibilities when mandated. Define the actual decision rights, personal implementation and participating owners rather than infer automatic hierarchy from the title.
At Elementor I led acquisition during company growth from $200K to $20M ARR alongside the wider team. The responsibilities below explain an operating approach, rather than proof that I owned every company function or a fixed working week offered to each client.

Four duties, each judged by the output it ships
"A chief growth officer owns one number and clears every blocker between the company and that number. Everything else is noise."
Yaniv Goldenberg, fractional growth operator
GTM alignment
Output: one quarterly growth plan and a single shared definition of a qualified lead that product, marketing, and sales have all signed. Not three competing roadmaps pulling in different directions.
Revenue operations
Output: documented source and funnel definitions, a tested measurement implementation where agreed, and prioritized findings with unknowns retained. Review acquisition costs and commercial outcomes over the eligible observation window.
Sales enablement
Output: a documented stage and handoff model, personally implemented agreed changes, and review of eligible lead and customer outcomes. A measured change in lead-to-close rate needs its own observation and comparison; it is not guaranteed by the handoff build.
Retention and expansion
Output: an owned net revenue retention target with an expansion motion that has one accountable owner. In a subscription business this is where the compounding lives.
What does a chief growth officer do day by day
Read the number
The week starts with the funnel, not the inbox. I pull last week's full-funnel numbers, compare them to the blueprint targets, and find the one metric that moved the wrong way. Everything else gets prioritized against that gap. If new-customer pacing is below the band, that becomes the week's job and the rest waits.
Fix the data
The revenue operations day. I sit with whatever attribution we have, find where it is lying, and fix the instrumentation so Monday's read is trustworthy next week. Most companies decide on last-click data that systematically misvalues their best channels. Cleaning that up is often the highest-impact move in the first month.
Work the seam
I run the working session between demand and pipeline. We look at the leads marketing generated, how many sales actually worked, and where the handoff drops them. This is the meeting nobody owns when there is no CGO, which is exactly why so much generated demand evaporates between the two teams.
Own retention
Time with customer success and product on the back half of the funnel: who is about to churn, who is a candidate for expansion, and whether the product-led motion has a commercial owner. In a subscription business this is where revenue compounds, and it is routinely the most neglected duty.
Update the blueprint
I review the agreed work, personally implement selected priorities and record decisions, observations and next owners. We agree whether the mandate needs continuing operation, a system build and handoff or a leadership transition, with maintenance and receiving capacity explicit.
Just as important: what a CGO does not do
Half of understanding the role is knowing what it is not, because the title gets stretched to cover everything and then means nothing. A chief growth officer owns more than campaign management. In my engagements I combine cross-functional growth decisions with personal delivery, including ad-account work when that is the constraint. The same line is drawn in fractional CMO vs a marketing manager.
I personally investigate and implement the agreed campaigns, journeys, systems and measurement as well as leading strategy. Compare the actual mandate, evidence, capacity and costs of a CGO, consultant or virtual CMO proposal. Advisory is my separate advice-only offer; neither title alone sets a functional limit or price premium.
The clearest way to think about it: a chief growth officer is accountable for a number, not for a function. If a tactic does not move that number, a good growth officer does not do it, no matter how busy it would keep them. That single rule is what separates the role from every job that just sounds like it.

Chief growth officer role FAQ
What does a chief growth officer do day to day?
What are the main duties of a chief growth officer?
Is a chief growth officer the same as a CMO?
What does a chief growth officer not do?
When is the right time to bring in a fractional chief growth officer?
The right time is when growth has stopped being one team's job and started being everyone's excuse, for example when marketing blames sales and sales blames lead quality. If your growth is healthy and one person already owns the full funnel end to end, you do not need a CGO yet.
Where does a chief growth officer's role end and a VP of growth's begin?
Strategy, team leadership, cross-functional authority and personal implementation follow the actual mandate. A VP can develop strategy and own broader decisions; a CGO does not automatically have authority over every function. Agree the responsibilities and participating owners explicitly.
What kind of companies do you work with as a fractional growth leader?
I work with companies that have product market fit and real traction and want to scale revenue, not just traffic. These are often B2B SaaS, B2C, or e-commerce companies, frequently Israeli companies selling to the US. If you are pre product market fit, we first need to establish whether a scoped engagement is appropriate.
Does a fractional CGO engagement have a minimum term, and what is involved in ending it?
Contract terms, including duration and notice period, are agreed per engagement. Ending a fractional engagement involves no severance. Scope, time commitment, duration and contract terms are all agreed before work starts.
